Job Overview
- Hours: 1.0 FTE (5 days per week, or 35 hours)
- Contract type: Permanent
- Salary: £37,336 (+ £3,000 London Weighting where applicable) per annum pro rata. This role sits within GI’s Band E which covers Spinal Points 29-33, equivalent to £37,336 - £41,418. The expectation is that all appointments will be made at Spinal Point 29.
- Hybrid working is available. We have a London office but the postholder can work remotely. There is a requirement to be present 1-2 times per month at London venues, and for occasional travel across the UK.

Context
The Public Engagement Team is a small department at Gendered Intelligence that oversees our engagement with public policy work; communications and media (including social media); and research. The postholder will join as the fifth team member.
The role
The Communications Co-ordinator role supports the day-to-day operations of GI’s current communications systems, maintaining and delivering within existing processes but also improving on these and bringing new expertise. The role involves working systematically to achieve agreed objectives, but independent working and creativity are also required, as well as an ability to react quickly to fast-changing environments.
You will be a key contributor to our external communications, managing our social media platforms and providing statements to media outlets, as well as building on our audio-visual outputs. You will play an integral role in the development of the charity’s profile, as well as helping develop internal communications guidance.
The Communications Co-ordinator will be line managed by the Head of Public Engagement who works remotely. The postholder will work alongside the team’s administrator who is responsible for social media scheduling, and also work closely with members of GI staff across our other service delivery departments - Professional and Educational Services, and Youth and Communities Services - as well as our Central Support Services Team.
Job description
The range of responsibilities and duties of this role will include the following, although priorities may change in line with the development of the role and other duties may be allocated from time to time:
Press and Media
- Acting as the first port of call for media-related inquiries across the organisation, with particular focus on press and media engagement – managing the team inboxes and responding to media requests.
- Working with the Head of Public Engagement to act as a voice and face of Gendered Intelligence. This will primarily involve providing comment for print and digital media, with scope to provide interviews for radio and television where the Head of Public Engagement is unavailable. N.B. There will be opportunities to develop your media training as part of the role.
- Preparing statements, quotes and briefings for dissemination.
- Building a robust library of response templates to press enquiries to ensure we respond to the majority within a timely manner.
- Maintaining a clear and unbiased assessment of current social and political issues.
- Carrying out detailed analysis of media outputs, our reach and metrics, and presenting this to the Public Engagement team, and the wider organisation, as well as providing reports for the Board.
- Building and maintaining a regular pitching schedule and database in order that Gendered Intelligence is proactively having its voice (and that of the wider communities we represent) heard in (inter)national publications.
- Taking a lead on liaising with our media networks and facilitating the placement of trans spokespeople.
- Working with the Head of Public Engagement and the Policy Co-ordinator (in partnership with the Trans Learning Partnership) to develop messaging and narrative strategies. N.B. There will be opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills around messaging and narrative change in the role.
Social Media
- With support from the administrator, promotion and scheduling of Gendered Intelligence’s events and activities across the organisation - including youth groups, recruitment for our annual camping trip, fundraisers and training opportunities, recruitment advertising for staff and volunteer etc.
- Creating a monthly newsletter in collaboration with our Fundraising Officer.
- Maintaining and developing Gendered Intelligence’s social media brand, and collaborating with the Head of Public Engagement.
- Updating the GI website, taking responsibility for updates to the News function on behalf of the Public Engagement team.
- Producing a monthly analysis of our media and social media engagement to be presented at our team meeting.
Policy and Research
- Representing GI in community events and spaces (e.g. the Trans Organising Network monthly meeting); developing relationships with other LGBT+ organisations.
- Establishing contacts and developing relationships across the LGBT+ and human rights sectors.
- Developing research and collaborative partnerships with other organisations.
Internal Communications
- Preparing a weekly ‘roundup’ of recent news and events relevant to the charity and to the sector.
- Maintaining a calendar of key ongoing and upcoming LGBT+ events and using it to support the Head of Public Engagement to develop a monthly content plan.
- Working with Heads and Directors across GI to ascertain their internal communication needs and acting upon them.
- Work collaboratively and collegiately across the organisation to develop an understanding of GI activities and viewpoints, in order to support and represent these externally.
Other responsibilities

Knowledge
- An awareness of trans identities, communities and gender diversity, including an up-to-date understanding of the language and terminology that is used by trans people as well as others.
- A deep understanding of, and strategic thinking around, the current media landscape surrounding trans and gender questioning people and gender diversity more broadly.
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as other key programmes such as Instagram
Experience
- Experience of working within a community-led, voluntary sector organisation
- Experience in medium- and long-term strategic planning, especially around media and communications
- Experience of running engaging and strategic social media campaigns
Desirable
- Experience of working within an LGBTQ+ setting
