CORONA VIRUS UPDATE - CHANGES TO ONLINE YOUTH GROUPS AND 1-2-1 SUPPORT AT GENDERED INTELLIGENCE

In light of the current situation, GI youth groups will be moving online. We will keep this page updated with instructions and any changes as we work them out.

What we’re doing

With the fast-changing situation, we decided on Tuesday 17th March to close all our face-to-face youth groups for at least 1 month and will review this as we go. As a team of youth workers, we are all still working from home (as our main offices had to close this week also) to ensure that we can support young trans people and – where possible, their families – through this time. We are learning alongside you about the crisis, how it feels, what to do and how to process what is going on.

We are also learning more and more about technology(!) and how to use it to enable us to continue to do our work, reach out to young trans people across the UK and attempt to come together as a community. This week in GI youth service we’ve been researching the various online platforms which we’d be keen to use to form groups on. Habbo Hotel, Zoom, Discord, Google Hangouts among others have been suggested. By Thursday the 26th March we should be ready to send out invites for next Saturday’s 11- 25s youth group space. We hope as many of you as possible can join us for that. If you can’t join us on online group spaces for whatever reasons, our lead youth workers will make time to call you and check in. Either way, please email us, keep an eye on our social media pages and our website to find out more.

How to find out about joining a GI online trans, non-binary or gender questioning youth group space

Please email youthwork@genderedintelligence.co.uk with the subject ‘ONLINE YOUTH GROUPS’. Include your name, age, whereabouts you live in the country and if you are ok with being phone by a GI youth worker to first of all check-in and find out your needs for being involved, include your mobile number. You don’t have to send any details at first if you just want to ask us a question.

What will happen next?

Out youth worker Jake will reply to you to say hey, and will include one of our lead youth workers that will run the group or groups you can join. Then you will hear from your group lead about the upcoming online spaces. The lead youth worker will need to phone you if you are new to GI so they can get to know you a bit and you can ask them anything about the groups and what will happen. All our youth workers are trans identified.

Isa (she or they pronouns) – runs our under 12s, 11 – 15s and 11 – 25s Community Saturday youth groups.

Rami (mostly they pronouns) – runs our Colours group for trans young people of colour aged 13 - 25

Sasha (they pronouns) – runs our 16 – 20 youth group

Finn T (he or they pronouns) – runs our Leeds and West Yorkshire groups

Bon (they pronouns) – runs our Bristol/ South West group

Then what?

The lead youth worker will then send you and email with a link to the online space.

These are trying times, but as trans people our community is familiar with overcoming challenges and we will adapt. If you're a young trans person, please know that we have no intentions of leaving you to face the times ahead without support - we will continue to support you for as long as we can. If you're worried about how things are, or concerned about your well-being or safety if you need to isolate, let us know and we will do what we can to support you.

Support for Young Trans and Gender Variant People

Youth Groups

Gendered Intelligence runs a range of youth groups in London, Leeds and Bristol for young trans people, non-binary and questioning young people aged under 21*. We also run a peer-led support group in London for those aged 18-30.

*Young trans people aged 8 or over are welcome to attend our Under 16 group in London and our Saturday sessions in London. At the moment, our groups in Leeds and Bristol are open for young people aged 13-20. If you are a young trans person under the age of 13 and would like to come along to the group, please get in touch.

No matter how you identify, Gendered Intelligence's trans youth groups are open to all young trans people - whether you're brand new to identifying as trans, still questioning your identity, or if you consider yourself to be post-transition or as having a trans history. We strive to be fully inclusive of individuals who identify as non-binary / other, as well as male or female.

KA-POW! Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is Power is a new on-line resource from Gendered Intelligence for young trans and gender variant people, their families and those who support them.

Over a 12 month period, we gathered information and experiences from young trans, gender variant and questioning people through a series of youth sessions. We also assembled research and writing from a diverse team of Gendered Intelligence community members.

Our Knowledge is Power project will provide you with lots of information, but it’s up to you to convert that into knowledge.

Knowledge is Power is a Big Lottery funded project.
