Why we declined the EHRC “Q&A session”

Last week, on 10 June, with just six days' notice, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) invited us to a “Q&A session” about their proposed updates in response to the recent Supreme Court ruling on sex in the Equality Act.

The EHRC stated that this session and the views expressed within it would not be considered part of the formal consultation process.

We declined this invitation.

It is not a genuine attempt at dialogue. It is a controlled, performative session – we believe held only because the Women and Equalities Committee required it.

We strongly believe that EHRC is failing in its duties to uphold the rights and dignity of trans people. They have consistently aligned with positions that are not only damaging to trans people but are actively hostile.

We will not legitimise this flawed process by attending the “Q&A” session. Our role as an organisation committed to justice for trans people requires us to stand firm in the face of what we view as systemic failure.

We will submit our response to the formal consultation and encourage others to do the same.
