Have you attended a Gendered Intelligence youth group in the past year? Fill in our feedback survey
We are keen to know what difference we have made to young people in the past year. The information we gather will be used for our report to Children in Need (current funders for the group sessions) as well as to seek further funding for the youth groups.
You must have attended a youth group (Bristol, Leeds, BAME, Saturday, 16-25 and under 16s) session since March 2015.
It’s not a long form - could take anything from 5 - 20 minutes of your time. Some answers are required but most are optional so don’t feel you have to say something in every box.
If you can also spread the word amongst other attendees of the youth groups, it would really help.
Following the TransActing project in London in summer 2015, we are running a one-day writing workshop for trans and/ or non-binary people aged 16 and over.
Saturday, 19 March, 10am-5pm
Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
Writer Jon Brittain will lead the workshop. Jon wrote Rotterdam (Theatre 503). See here for an interview where Jon talks about the play which has a trans character at the heart of it. Jon joined one of the TransActing project sessions back in October last year to talk with the group about writing trans characters (among other things) and a number of project participants were keen to do more work on writing as well as developing performance skills.
Jon’s one-day workshop will run 10am – 5pm on Saturday 19th March at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
The day will be structured into three parts:
Getting started (tips and tricks to start creating characters and scenes)
Re-writing (taking your first draft to the next stages)
What next? (getting your work read and seen)

The workshops will be about skills sharing and bringing participants’ experiences together. You’ll be talking about writing for film and theatre and to a lesser extent, television.
You don’t have to have much experience of writing to register for this workshop. The workshop is open to people aged 16 +.

The youth group runs on the 1st Wednesday of every month.
Upcoming date:
3rd February 2016
Time: 6.00 pm– 8.00 pm
From 5th August 2015 the group location is changing from Tavistock Leeds Base to Yorkshire MESMAC building.
Address: 22/23 Blayds Yard, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS1 4AD
At 6.30pm on Sunday 21 February, American trans activist, writer and performer Kate Bornstein will introduce a screening of the documentary Kate Bornstein is a Queer & Pleasant Danger at London’s Cinema Museum.
Kate will be joined in conversation by two young trans people.
No experience of acting is required, and if you do have
experience, you are welcome too. You might want to use some techniques used in
the workshop to build your confidence for giving presentations or you might
already know that you want to pursue training or a career as a performer.
The workshop will include some warm-up exercises that you would
experience in a rehearsal room or in a Drama School setting. You will warm up
your body, your mind and your voice. The session will include some work in
pairs, concentrating on listening and responding to a partner. We work to
create a safe and gender-inclusive environment in our workshops.
People who’ve been part of these workshops before, tell us that
being able to do drama and acting techniques in a trans and/ or non-binary
inclusive space is a great experience.
The workshop leader will be Barry Fitzgerald who is part of the
GI TransActing project team and the Outbox project team. He also teaches at
Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
The workshop is a collaboration between Gendered Intelligence,
Outbox Theatre Company and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Finn, our London youth work lead, will be coming to Leeds to run a session for young trans, gender variant and questioning young people aged 13-25 on hate crime and how to report it.
Alongside this session we will be running a group for parents and carers.
If you would like to receive information about future Leeds sessions for young people or parents/carers, please fill in this form.

January: Mental Health - Coping & Self-Care
This month we’ll be talking about how to cope with ongoing mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression. It is a heavy topic so we will be making sure everyone feels safe in the space and signposting organisations that can help.
