Statement on Refugee Family Reunions
We’re dismayed at today’s announcement that the UK will bring in tighter restrictions on family reunions for refugees.
Refugees may have lost their homes and possessions fleeing unrest and prejudice. It is unconscionable that the government now makes it harder for them to be with their families.
We stand in solidarity with all those seeking safety in the UK. The demonisation of asylum seekers and refugees by the media and politicians echoes the same right-wing rhetoric we see about the trans community. It’s vital we stand together.
We know that LGBT+ asylum seekers face further barriers. Their relationships or identities may not be recognised by their countries of origin, and they may face further prejudice when they seek safety.
It’s on all of us in the queer community to welcome refugees. We’re building links with organisations like Rainbow Migration to learn how we can do more to support trans asylum seekers
We encourage all our colleagues and community members to learn more about what you can do to support people seeking safety in the UK.
