To accompany the above toolkit, we offer a basic description of key terms.

This glossary focuses specifically on a short list of terms that describe key ideas relevant to trans people’s lives and which help underpin positive, practical policy choices. Other glossaries take different approaches, and have different purposes and scopes. Several more extensive glossaries are listed in the 'Resource List for Professionals'.

NOTE: When referencing any trans-related glossary, it should be taken as a guideline rather than definitive. In particular, it's important to recognise that the particular term(s) different individuals use to describe their personal experience or identity are many and varied. A person may use terms other than (or as well as) the ones included in any glossary, so it's best to avoid making assumptions. If you need to know how to approach language on an individual basis, there is basic information in the free Policy Toolkit, and the subject is also addressed in our training.
