This course has been created in response to demand across the mental health sector for more in-depth, specialist training in working with trans and non binary people.
The course aims to build a community of trans-knowledgeable therapists, counsellors and mental health practitioners for the trans community to draw on.
On completion of the course, all participants will be invited to join our practitioners network which provides access to ongoing learning and support and regular facilitated reflective practice sessions. Qualified Therapists and Counsellors who complete the course will have the opportunity to be listed in our Directory, a trusted resource for members of the trans community seeking therapy or counselling.
The training is a mix of formal presentations, interactive exercises and reflective discussions delivered in a small group learning environment by two professional trainers who combine extensive therapeutic and trans-specific knowledge and practice.
Eligibility: This course is for psychotherapists and counsellors (in training or in active practice) and mental health practitioners. You may already be working alongside trans and non binary people or you may be interested in beginning work alongside gender diverse people. Excellent - extremely informative and useful. I really valued the experiential exercises and the case studies. A very knowledgeable group, which I learned a lot of from. And the lunch was delicious - thank you!

I think at a fundamental level, this training expanded and shifted how I understand gender, and how I understand my trans and NB clients' experiences. It has helped me in the (ongoing) work of stepping my own thinking outside of gender binaries, which I have already felt the benefit of in my client work.

Guided by two experienced and compassionate facilitators, who generously shared their own lived experiences, we were invited into thoughtful dialogue, reflection and learning. The training explored not only affirming practice, but also the historical context, including how colonialism has shaped narratives around gender diversity, despite the fact that gender-diverse people have always existed across cultures. I left with a deeper empathy for the challenges many trans and gender diverse people face, alongside an even greater respect for the joy, creativity and resilience within these communities. I also left with a renewed commitment to being a better ally and learning more. It felt significant to step out of this space and into a media landscape where conversations about gender diversity are increasingly urgent and often polarised, from coverage of violence that centres identity over context, to public debates about social media and new school guidance. At a time when myths can spread quickly, it feels more important than ever to approach this work with nuance, compassion and a commitment to seeing and supporting the whole person.
