The role requires someone to have experience of managing a team, youth work delivery experience and experience of working with young people in complex circumstances including supporting with wellbeing. The role holder will work closely with the Head of Youth and Community Services.

Job Overview

  • Salary: £39,862.03, plus £3,250 London Weighting where applicable

Occupational Requirement

The Role

The Youth and Communities Services Department is divided into two teams: Adult Well Being; and Youth and Families Services, in which this post sits. 

The Youth and Families Services is organised into three distinct but overlapping areas of work: Youth Work, Mentoring (in educational settings) and Families Work.  

The youth work is delivered through regular online and in person groups in London and Leeds, as well as Residential trips. The service also supports the Youth board and other youth engagement activities such as attendance at Pride etc. GI Youth Services are available to young people from age 8 up to 25. Youth work also includes some amount of 1:1 to support for those in complex life situations. 

Adult Wellbeing services provide services to adults including a support line and online group work. 

The Youth work manager will be part of a team of 2 Senior Practitioners working within the Trans Mentoring and Adult Wellbeing team. The post holder will report to the Head of Youth and Community Services. They will have direct line management responsibility for a team of youth work coordinators who work part time. The youth work team is also staffed by sessional workers. The role holder will share some supervision responsibilities with the coordinators as well as the support and development of a small cohort of volunteers. 

The post holder will hold shared responsibility for attaining GI’s goal of improving gender diverse lives and increasing understandings of gender diversity. You will identify and meet the needs of young trans people in order to deliver a programme of youth work activities. And support the implementation of an operational work plan that reflects the needs of young people. 

Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The range of responsibilities and duties of this role will include the following, although priorities may change in line with the development of the role and other duties may be allocated from time to time:

  • Support the Youth Work team to deliver impactful, meaningful and sustainable youth work practice to trans young people in Leeds, London, Online, Residentials and Camps.
  • Be responsible for ensuring consistency of practice and quality across all GI’s youth provision.
  • Ensure safeguarding and risk assessment processes are followed so that all children and young people accessing GI are safe, especially in provision with a wider age range.
  • Be a key person for any queries from the team about youth work practice and support colleagues when they are unsure how to respond to a situation.
  • Line manage youth work co-ordinators and support them with line-management of sessional youth workers.
  • Develop and hold relationships with key partners that position GI’s youth service in a national framework of youth work practices.
  • Collaborate with the Head of YCS and the team to develop the future GI youth service offer. 

Specific Requirements

Service Delivery

  • Be part of an on-call rota for youth groups and respond to safeguarding and wellbeing concerns from the youth work team. Co-ordinate with the DSLs where relevant. 
  • Deliver a small percentage of 1-1 work with young people in complex circumstances, or who are deemed most at risk in the service. This is in collaboration with the Head of YCS.
  • Support with planning and delivery of our annual events e.g. Pride season, End of Year Events, Imagining Our Futures sessions and residentials, with the focus on young people and youth worker’s safe involvement. 

Reporting 

  • Liaise with the YCS administrator to produce quarterly impact reports
  • Contribute to quarterly Board Reports

Meetings

  • Support the Head of YCS in the planning and running of department meetings, with an embedded programme of training/ workshops to support the continued professional development needs of your team and the practice.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to the work of the wider organisation.
  • Plan and run bi-monthly meetings for Coordinators and weekly announcements for the YCS team, with support from the Head of Youth & Communities. 

Networking & Communications

  • Attend National LGBTQ and Youth Work network meetings/ events/ conferences to stay looped into current practice and national issues in the field.
  • Represent the Youth Service at all times where necessary.
  • Work with the Coordinators and the Head of YCS to develop an ongoing relationship with the venue managers and other staff at youth group venues.
  • Keep up with communications from the youth work team and the wider team at GI , as well as developing your own professional relationships with young people and external agencies. 

Training & Development 

  • Attend mandatory safeguarding training and other relevant Continuing Professional Development programmes.
  • Design and deliver training or workshops within the youth service, or to external organisations (if necessary and if in your interest sphere). 
  • Provide and plan observations for Coordinators and Sessional Youth Workers when needed.

Cover

  • Organise or provide cover and assistance to your team in project delivery.

ESSENTIAL
Experience, Skills and Abilities
At least 3 years of relevant experience in youth work provision, including some delivery in LGBT voluntary sector and/or mainstream services.
Experience of planning, managing and running a youth project
In-depth experience of working with young people in complex / risky circumstances, including supporting with wellbeing / mental health
Experience working on high level and sensitive safeguarding cases with colleagues, young people and external bodies
Experience working in a team and effectively managing relationships, teamwork, shared responsibility, conflict and other team issues
Experience managing a team, including line management
Excellent verbal and written communication skills - Ability to communicate with tact, sensitivity and in a diplomatic manner with a range of different stakeholders including young people, parents and carers, and other professionals
A good level of IT skills to undertake own administrative tasks, including MS Office, SharePoint, and zoom.
Highly organised and self-motivated with an ability to manage your own time and prioritise a varied workload
Manage risk effectively, and to know when to refer to colleagues for support
Demonstrate previous following of organisational policies and procedures, including equal opportunities and the implications of working with difference and diversity in a similar setting to Gendered Intelligence
Able to ask for support and communicate when struggling
Knowledge
An intersectional understanding of the issues facing young trans people
An awareness of current legislation and safeguarding procedures relating to children and young people and how these apply to the role
Clear understanding of the nature of confidentiality and boundaries and the need for strict following of our confidentiality policy

DESIRABLE
Experience of working within a trans youth group setting specifically
Educated to level 2, graduate or post graduate level in youth and community work
